Riley

Riley is such a sweet, happy and mellow guy! When he meets new people or dogs, or when your return home after being out, he does get excited and does a full body wag. He is a total gentleman and gets along great with our resident golden retriever and is very respectful of her place in the household even though he is much bigger than her and could push his weight around. In the short time he’s been with us, he shows he is a quick learner. Learning not to go on the furniture; to “go lie down” if we are eating and he starts to beg; and showing improvement with his walking skills (he initially was quite the “puller”). He does get excited when he sees new dogs, so he is learning to sit and I hold his collar and he stays put (otherwise this strong boy will try his darndest to reach the other dog). He has gotten along with every dog we’ve met, including unneutered young males. He is friendly with dog savvy cats. He is excited to meet cats too, so it’s important to have him sit and stay calm so the cat feels safe upon meeting. He is crate trained but also happy to sleep on a dog bed at night. He loves long walks but is also super content lying around and chilling out while I work. He is super affectionate but not needy. He really seems to enjoy the company of other dogs but would be also happy being the solo dog if he gets walks and love. He is amazing with kids, big and small. Riley would love having kids around. Because he is a big boy, he could easily knock a smaller child over by accident so mindful play with little ones would be needed, but he is gentle and loving and even gives out the occasional kiss if you are a willing recipient. He does have a tendency to rip apart stuffed toys – whether dog or human toys. Keeping him occupied with bones seems to help keep him from chewing or eating things that will make his sensitive tummy upset. He does not chew on furniture or rugs or anything of that sort. He is very food oriented and tries to eat his foster sisters food before she is done so if you have another dog, you will need to work with him to only eat his food. He is a great watchdog and will bark if someone comes in the driveway or knocks on the door. Otherwise he is quiet and quite the gentleman. He doesn’t bark at other dogs, the chickens we keep, etc. Whoever ends up with this lovebug will be so lucky. He is a true gem with the classic golden retriever personality. Get ready for some serious oxytocin hits if you choose to have Riley join your family!
