Tell us why you want to a Golden Retriever and bring it into your household.

If you are approved, tell us if you can take a dog immediately; If not, tell us why not and tell us when you can take a dog.

Tell us any preferences re age range or sex of the dog. Please note that most applicants want females under 1 year old, but we mostly see surrenders older than that of both sexes. If you limit your age or sex preferences, it will likely extend the time it takes to find a match

Tell us how long the dog will be alone regularly due to the applicants work or school schedule.

NGRR strongly prefers our dogs to be adopted into households where the dog will be a family pet. Tell us if you have any other plans for the dog such as hunting, companion or service dog.

About Your Household Now

Are there other dogs, cats, birds, farm animal, etc., in the household or on the property? If so, please list them by type, name and age.

About The Yard and Fence

Please describe your yard in detail where the dog will play and do his/her business: fenced or not, whether there is a grass area, open land, locked gates, pool or spa, etc.

If yard is fenced, please tell us the height of the fence. If the fence height varies, please tell us the shortest fence height from the ground.

If no yard, where will the dog play and do his/her business?

If there is a swimming pool is it separately fenced to keep dog out?

If not, describe how you will prevent the dog form accidently falling in to the pool.

If you have either a pool or spa, golden retrievers enjoy swimming, so how will you train your dog to be safe around pools and /or spas?

Your Experience With Dogs

Describe the living situation for dogs currently in your care, if any. Tell us if they are mostly inside or outside dogs, where they sleep at night, where they play or exercise, how they fit in to the household, etc.

Describe the living situation for dogs that you previously cared for but have since died or left your care.

If you ever had to put a dog down, please tell us the circumstances of each.

If you ever had to relinquish a dog, please tell us the circumstances of each.

If you ever adopted a rescue or shelter dog before, please tell us the Rescue group or shelter, breed, age and sex of dog at adoption, and how it turned out.

Your Choice for a Golden Retriever

Senior dog: please tell us under what conditions you might consider a senior dog (over 8 years old).

Dog with minor health or behavioral issues: please tell us any of your concerns re considering such a dog.

Bonded Pair: Occasionally we get 2 dogs from same household who are especially bonded to each other even though they may not be siblings and even if one is not a Golden. Tell us under what conditions you might consider taking both.

Barking: Many Goldens bark when someone comes to he door, but typically do not bark excessively at other times. Are you OK with this?

Shedding: All goldens shed requiring more vacuuming and house cleaning . Will this bother you?

Chewing, digging, etc.: Most Goldens are free of these traits, and if they occur can be trained out of them. Tell us if you would be willing to work with a golden with one of these issues.

Caring For Your Golden Retriever

Who in your household will be the primary caretaker of this dog?

Where will the Golden sleep at night? Please describe if different summer vs winter, good or bad weather, etc.

Where will the Golden live during the day when you are home i.e., inside or outside, garage? Please describe if different summer vs winter, good or bad weather, etc.

Where will the Golden stay if you are gone for long periods during the day?

When you travel, who will care for the Golden?

How will you exercise the Golden? Describe the area and what is available such as run, walk, swim, fetch, obedience or ability, other.

If you have owned dogs before were they micro chipped, and will you microchip the new Golden.

Describe how much responsibility will your child or children be given in the care and management of the dog such as Housebreaking, Socializing, Feeding, Behavior, Grooming, Obedience, Training.

Vet care: NGRR expects it’s dogs to see a vet whenever they have a medical problems, at least annually for a physical,for vaccinations, and for heartworm tests if advised by your vet. Goldens area also prone to allergies causing skin and ear irritations. Please tell us that you understand that as a result, there may be significant vet costs and that you are wiling to bear them.

Training Your Golden
