Benito – Updated Apr 27

Benito has a fun, strong and independent personality with a puppy-like playfulness! With his foster, he has learned some basic commands when being fed (sit/wait). He is starting to understand “stay” but still needs work with this one. He has an adorable sit-up on his hind legs and loves to ask for belly rubs in that position! Benito is currently in a 4-week board-and-train in Antioch. His trainer has said he is sweet and sensitive and gets along with all the other dogs except one. He absolutely loves hugs and cuddling with his foster on the couch in the evenings. He loves to play with squeaky stuffies but sometimes decides to taste the stuffie insides as some goldens do! He loves to play fetch with balls and will come back to you with the ball. The foster has worked on getting him to release the ball to play again and he is starting to understand that more playing happens when he gives up the ball. As Benito has settled in after 3-4 weeks, a few toys and Nu-Bones (for chewing) have been able to be left out with him and the other dogs around in his foster home with supervision nearby. He has a cute trot when following you around. At night, he sleeps well 8+ hours in the bedroom with the foster (not crated). He has never had an accident inside the home, and will gently paw the sliding door if he wishes to go out. With other dogs, he has a bit of FOMO (fear of missing out) on the next best toy stuffed animal or ball that one of the other dogs in the foster home might have at the same time. Benito is sure that the other toy MUST be better than the one he currently has. At the foster home, he does approach a more submissive female golden slowly and gently to think about taking the toy but the foster has not witnessed any aggression. If he could, he’d hog multiple toys in his mouth! In the foster home, there is also a larger male golden and Bentio and him doggie wrestle very well together. A home with another larger dog who loves to play, but will also be calm when needed, would be a great home for Benito. Supervision would still be recommended as he can get overly excited at times. The foster has never witnessed him attempting to hump either dog. Benito eats twice a day in the kitchen with other dogs, but always with the foster parent nearby and out of direct view of the other two dogs in the foster home. They generally all finish at the same time and there are no problems. The foster parent has been picking up Benito’s dog bowl right after he finishes so the other dogs don’t check it out. It’s always been easy to feed him and the other dogs at the foster home at the same time. The board and train is currently working on leash walking, and other commands such as recall, drop it, etc. He does have a somewhat strong desire to dig on the acreage of the foster parent home as there are gophers around, and he also likes to search for lizards on the outside home walls/windows. With time and outside supervision, the foster parent believes that Benito will learn not to dig after a few months as he had started to respond to the foster before going to his training. He will need ongoing supervision for a while on this as he’s using that golden instinct to find that gopher or whatever else he might sniff out or see! He rides very well in the car, settling down very quickly. He is not fully crate trained but this is also being worked on currently. He has shown improvement in this. Benito came from a home without supervision for 5 hours a day and was left in the backyard with other dogs. Thus, he has learned some minor bad habits that are correctable. As a result of his previous home situation, he does have major separation anxiety and will bark for multiple minutes after crated. The foster parent works from home and rarely has to crate him, and he never barks at any other time when with the foster family. It is not currently recommended to leave him uncrated in the home or yard as his “busy-ness” can lead to mischief. He has separation anxiety and would be best placed in a work from home situation. After his initial board & train, Benito can be placed directly into adoption or we also welcome a foster to adopt situation. We believe the best adoption fit would be an active family/person who works from home to minimize separation anxiety, can walk him daily and continue to work on his training. He was good with kids in his previous home. With more time in his forever home, and a possible playmate dog who would help him to use some of the big energy that he has, it should help him to learn from the other pup and gain better manners as he has already started to exhibit better inside behavior.
